SANY Group has officially signed a strategic cooperation MoU with Codelco, the world’s top copper mining enterprise, followed by a grand delivery ceremony for the trial deployment of SANY battery-electric heavy trucks. This milestone represents a crucial step in accelerating the mining sector’s green transition and fostering a win-win partnership between the two sides.

As the first major milestone of this collaboration, SANY’s battery-electric heavy trucks have completed a trial run on Latin America’s longest and most demanding heavy-haul downhill mining route for electric vehicles. Their exceptional performance has far exceeded customer expectations.

The trial route runs round-trip between Codelco’s Radomiro Tomic Copper Mine and Puerto Angamos, covering a total distance of 680 kilometers with a cumulative elevation gain of over 2,500 meters. The vehicles not only traverse the Atacama Desert — known as the “world’s driest desert” — but also endure multiple challenges posed by extreme operating conditions, including an arid climate, strong crosswinds, and dramatic altitude changes.

Faced with such complex road conditions, SANY’s electric heavy-duty trucks achieved stable operation throughout the entire journey by leveraging a high-torque electric drive system and intelligent energy regeneration technology. This accomplishment fully validated, through innovative technology and robust performance, the technical feasibility and environmental adaptability of battery-electric heavy trucks in long-distance, high-elevation-difference transport scenarios.

Codelco’s Vice President praised the outcome, stating: “The preliminary results demonstrate that battery-electric heavy truck haulage is a technically viable alternative for strategic routes of this nature. We are honored to be a pioneer in Latin America.”

Cao Te, Chairman of SANY Latin America, noted: “Against the backdrop of high fuel prices, electric equipment boasts distinct advantages in reducing costs, boosting efficiency and cutting carbon emissions. This cooperation not only represents recognition of SANY’s technology but also constitutes a crucial step in advancing the green transformation of mining logistics.”

According to estimates, a single SANY E588 battery-electric heavy-duty truck charged with green electricity can reduce CO₂ emissions by over one hundred tons per year, delivering true zero tailpipe emissions and low noise operation — a perfect fit for Codelco’s sustainable development strategy. This achievement has received extensive coverage from major Chilean media outlets, including CNN Chile.

Moving forward, the two parties will deepen cooperation in areas such as green mine development and carbon reduction technologies, jointly forging a sustainable future of mutual benefit and shared prosperity.
